Der Hamburger Photograph Götz Wrage hat Jan Kollwitz bei den Vorbereitungen und dem Brand im Jahre 2009 über einen Zeitraum von zehn Monaten mit seiner Kamera begleitet.

Der Titel „Herr Yamashiro bevorzugt Kartoffeln“ bezieht sich auf eine Anekdote, die tatsächlich passiert ist: Der Ofenmeister, der 1988 seine eigenen Köche dabei hatte, entdeckte in Cismar seine Leidenschaft für die einfache deutsche Küche, „was für seine Landsleute eine große Schmach war“, erzählt Jan Kollwitz, der damals als Dolmetscher alle Hände voll zu tun hatte.
Im Jahr 2010 erschien im Wachholtz-Verlag ein Buch mit dem Titel Japan beginnt an der Ostsee - Die Keramik des Jan Kollwitz. Der Schriftsteller Christoph Peters hat den Lebensweg von Kollwitz aufgeschrieben, und der Hamburger Fotograf Götz Wrage hat das Buch illustriert.
